Commissions

 

I work closely with clients to realise their commission ideas and am constantly inspired by their hopes for each new piece. I love it when a client comes up with a really challenging idea – everyone needs to push the boundaries now and then!

If the commission is for a picture I very often create two, maybe three, quite different designs so I can fully explore the colour and texture possibilities.

 

If the commission is for a garment I will always bring it for a fitting before the final shrinking; once the fit is correct, then the very important process of choosing and positioning the handmade buttons and handspun silk braid loops can take place.

I work from my home studio, making unique and colourful felt garments and wall panels from finest merino wool and jewel-bright silk.  Handspun yarns and silk fibres are incorporated into the surface of my work to add texture and depth.  All my work is wet felted by hand, using a process unchanged for centuries. 

My coats are seamless and reversible, allowing each side to be a different colour and to feature a different design - two for the price of one!  Incredibly warm and windproof, even shrugging off showers.  I spin silk and make the braid for the button loops - I even make the buttons!

Pictures can be mounted or deep-framed, each method giving surprisingly different results.  I love to create images of my native Dorset, chickens, fishes and flowers - a fairly eclectic mix!  High quality prints of some images are available.

The jewellery range combines felted spheres with buttons, stones, beads, semi-precious stones and exuberant felt swirls, knots and rosettes.   The tactile and visual contrast between the the warmth and softness of the felt, the lustre of the silk and the coolness and weight of the stones is amazing!
